Dear Gefen Families,

This week in social studies we focused on Martin Luther King. We began with a story and then watched a wonderful video called Our Friend Martin. In this cartoon movie, two boys time travel through MLK's life. It is really a great learning tool. The students wrote about their dreams for the world and then completed some various activities about Martin's life.

Yom Ivrit was a hit! The children had fun as they made name necklaces and key chains. They also learned to say the names of their snacks in Hebrew and they wrote words that began with certain letters within those giant letters (anything that begins with lamed gets written in a giant lamed).

We continue to work on contractions. Please encourage your child to use the flash cards to practice. The most difficult one is "will not" becoming "won't." We also continue to work on our graphing skills. We've looked at line graphs, bar graphs and pictographs. In addition, we practiced our "tallying" skills.

Shabbat Shalom,

Hamorah Caren

Dear Gefen Families,

This week in our study of Civil Rights we focused on the life of Ruby Bridges. We began by reading a story about her life and then we watched a movie about her story. (Throughout our Civil Rights unit we will be watching a few learning movies.) As we discussed the movie in detail, the students were asked to think about why her story is so important and what lessons it can teach us. We learned why Ruby was patient, courageous, hopeful and peaceful. We shared what we would have done had we been in Ruby's situation. And, finally, we watched a short Scholastic clip of an interview with Ruby conducted by a young student.

In math we began our unit on graphs. This week we focused on pictographs and bar graphs, Next, we will be looking at line graphs, marking coordinates and counting tallies.

We continue with our study of contractions. Flash cards were sent home to practice.

In writer's workshop we worked on "How to . . . . . ." writing. These were the topics:
Alyssa: how to brush your teeth
Talia: how to hoola hoop
Hana: how to ice skate
Maayan: how to play the piano
Aiden: how to play wall ball
Melanie: how to create a dress
Nate: how to play baseball
Justin: how to play tug-of-war with your dog
Amanda S.: how to make cookies
Amanda M.: how to ride a horse

Stop by and check out the bulletin board in our hallway to find out how to do all of these important things!

Shabbat Shalom,

Hamorah Caren

Dear Gefen Families,

Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a restful winter break.

In this short week we continued with our time unit in math. Some students have moved on from reading a clock to solving elapsed time word problems. We also reviewed fractions and money.

We began our new social studies unit on civil rights. After writing a list of what we already know, we learned about the word "segregation." Then the children were asked to list some of their traits and find others who were similar and different. We discussed that although we may look different on the outside or have different kinds of families, etc. that we are all the same on the inside. We shared an African Folktale called "Why Frog and Snake Never Play Together" to help the children understand why segregation is wrong. And, last, we gave the children different scenarios to act out. The audience members had to tell who was being segregated and why.

For Torah, we touched on the story of the binding of Isaac. We discussed that a sacrifice is when we give up something important to us. The children were asked to think about a time that they made a sacrifice and how they felt about it.

And, last, contractions were introduced.

Shabbat Shalom,

Hamorah Caren
